Maine State Police and local police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy that was reported Tuesday evening in the central Maine town of Oakland.
Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a statement that the boy was found dead by first responders inside the home at 19 Church St. shortly after 6 p.m.
McCausland said investigators have been interviewing the boy’s parents. A team of evidence technicians will be assisting detectives as officers work to determine the circumstances of the boy’s death.
The boy’s body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy will be conducted Wednesday.
At least 10 officers from the state police and the Oakland Police Department, including Police Chief Michael Tracy, could be seen gathered around 7 p.m. outside the house.
Yellow caution tape surrounded the front of the house.
More information is expected to be released Wednesday, McCausland said.
Oakland is in Kennebec County near Waterville.
