The Brunswick Police Department on Saturday would not release the names of the victims or further information about Friday’s fatal car crash on Route 1.

Two adults and one child were killed in a single-vehicle crash when the vehicle went off the road in the southbound lane and “crashed into a steep rock embankment and burst into flames with the occupants still inside,” according to the Brunswick police report.

Police responded to the accident near the New Meadows Road exit at 4:17 p.m. Friday.

Several motorists stopped at the accident to try to extinguish the fire and managed to pull a boy and a girl from the vehicle, police reported.

However, the two adults in the front seat were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. And the girl was taken to Mid Coast Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The boy was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

The occupants of the vehicle are believed to be related, police reported. But the crash remains under investigation, and it is a case involving the state medical examiner’s office.

Brunswick Police Chief Scott Stewart said Saturday night that the next of kin have been notified and that more information is expected to be released on Monday.
