Susan Auglis

SCARBOROUGH – Susan Auglis, 80, passed away on March 7, 2022 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born Susan Jane Shaw, daughter of Delmar D. Shaw Jr., and Frances Lorraine Libby in 1941.

She was born in Portland and lived for more than 50 years on Black Point Road in Scarborough on land where both her father and grandmother grew up. The house where she was living when she died was just 200 ft. from the house where her family lived when she was born.

Susan was devoted to her hometown of Scarborough where for many years she was an active volunteer in town governance and environmental and charitable organizations.

She had great knowledge of and love for the marsh and was passionately involved in caring for it as a member of the Friends of Scarborough Marsh. She gave tours of the marsh for several years, introducing many to the Egrets, Herons and other birds of the marsh that lit up her heart.

She was a keen observer of life and translated her observations into poetry and stunning photographs. She enjoyed traveling, especially her “going to ride” adventures, both local and afar. She kept a Gazetteer in her car and used a permanent marker, and journal, to highlight every road on which she traveled. Her other interests included gardening, weaving, family history, yoga, meditation, Buddhism and walking on the beach.

She loved talking on the phone to friends and even customer service reps from whom she always got whatever she wanted. She loved people; she was curious and would strike up a conversation with anybody anywhere. She was a great and loyal friend; she listened to people intently and would have deep conversations about life and relationships. That was her gift. She was there for you when you needed her.

She loved to read and was a gifted writer herself. She had an eloquent way with words, especially poetry:

Motionless and cloaked by a greying landscape the heron is solitary guardian of the crossroads where bountiful fades to scarcity where fall becomes winter

Susan leaves behind her husband of 43 years, Michael Auglis; sister Daryl Hahn of Thomaston and her husband Bill, brother Brian Shaw of Black Mountain, NC, and his wife Debbie; her daughter from a previous marriage to Ken Millett, Rebecca Millett, her husband Kevin Kobel and their twin children Christopher and Hannah Kobel of Cape Elizabeth, to whom she was devoted; her niece Jennie Hahn and nephew Michael Hahn; and her beloved cats, Emma, Avery and Toby.

Susan’s family and vast number of friends mourn her loss and will remember her with love and gratitude. They are sad about the blow that life dealt her but know that she took control of the outcome as she is known to do. Rest in peace, dear Susan.

A celebration of Susan’s life is planned for the spring.
