Robert F. Godin

WESTBROOK – Robert F. Godin passed away on July 7, 2022 at the age of 96 with his loving family by his side. Born to Frederick and Marie Ann Godin in Westbrook, Bob grew up in the Frenchtown area of Westbrook where he was known as “uncle” to his friends. He was a great story teller and enjoyed sharing tales of the characters he met and worked with along the way, of swimming in the Presumpscot River, running home at night before the 9 o’clock whistle blew, playing hockey, and the huge bonfires they would have.

Bob served in the Navy, in the Pacific during World War II. During a leave from boot camp he attended a dance at St. Hyacinth Church, he tells of seeing this beautiful girl coming down the stairs and his heart stopped! He knew she would be the love of his life. He and Pat were married for 63 wonderful years residing in West Gorham and Westbrook. They had seven children, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He worked briefly at the Dana Warp Mill, the Portland Shipyard and then for 49 years at S.D. Warren. During that time, he bought some land on Little Pond and built a small hunting camp. He and his son Jimmy added on to the camp and it became a favorite spot for family parties. Pep and Meme loved nothing more than to see all of the little ones together and participating in Meme’s Olympic Games. Bob had a wicked sense of humor and loved to razz his family about their favorite teams and pretty much everything else.

After retirement, Bob finally got to put all of his wood working tools and workshop to good use making over 550 doll cradles for Toys for Tots. He would never accept acknowledgement for them. He just knew of hard times in his life and wanted to brighten children lives. He was a strong, decent and kind man. His sweet smile and big heart will be missed forever.

Bob was predeceased by his wife Patricia; and son James.

He is survived by his daughters Cheryl Wald and her husband William, Theresa Vance and her husband Steve, Cathy Placey and her husband Rick, his sons Edward Godin and his wife Nancy, Fred Godin and his wife Debbie and Steven Godin and his longtime partner, Christy Bates.

The Godin family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Maine Veterans Home for the exceptional care and kindness.

A visitation will be held on August 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dolby, Blais, Segee Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, with a funeral service starting at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Hyacinth Cemetery on Stroudwater Street in Westbrook.
