The Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram took top honors at the Maine Press Association’s annual awards ceremony Saturday night.

The Press Herald’s website, PressHerald.com, won first place for general excellence in the digital category. The newspaper’s Sunday edition, the Maine Sunday Telegram, won the weekend category. The Press Herald also won first place for general excellence in advertising. The Bangor Daily News won general excellence in the daily print category.

In all, the Press Herald took home more than 60 awards at the event in Bar Harbor, part of the MPA’s first in-person conference since the pandemic began. Two Press Herald journalists – reporter Matt Byrne and photographer Gregory Rec – each nabbed three first-place prizes.

Steve Collins, a reporter with the Sun Journal in Lewiston, was named Journalist of the Year. Melissa Logan of the Sun Journal was named Advertising Person of the Year. Morning Sentinel photographer Michael Seamans won the Best in Show award.

Six journalists were inducted into the MPA Hall of Fame: Dieter Bradbury, who retired last year as deputy managing editor of the Press Herald; Judy Meyer, executive editor of the Sun Journal; the late Dorothy “Dot” Roderick, who was an advertising executive with the Press Herald; retired Mount Desert Islander editor Earl Brechlin; Lincoln County News publisher Chris Roberts; and Paula Roberts, a longtime sports reporter and photographer for the Lincoln County News.
