The body of a dead male washed ashore on Sears Island in Searsport and was discovered by a group of hikers Saturday morning.

The hikers reported the body about 9:15 a.m. Saturday, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Deputies responded to the scene and assessed the man’s body, but provided no further details.

A Waldo Sheriff’s Office spokesman told local media on Saturday that the body appeared to have been in the water for a significant period, and the victim appeared to be in his 20s. Missing-person cases were active in the area because of people jumping into the Penobscot River, the spokesman said.

The Waldo Sheriff’s Office is working with multiple agencies to confirm the male’s identity and determine the circumstances of the incident.

The body was brought from the scene to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
