A Hancock man was killed Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden, authorities said.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said state police responded to the crash just after 4:30 p.m. near mile marker 176 on I-95 south.

Thomas Merchant, 63, of Hancock was found dead in the car, which had come to rest in the grassy median between the southbound and northbound lanes.

Police believe Merchant crashed the green Acura sedan he was driving into the guardrails before skidding to a stop about 300 feet away. Troopers also believe speed and Saturday’s wet weather factored into the wreck, Moss said.

The crash is under investigation.
