HARTFORD — A Buckfield man found damaging a home on Pratt Hill Road on Monday night suffered a medical event at the scene while in police custody and died later at a Lewiston Hospital, Oxford County Sheriff Chief Deputy James Urquhart said Tuesday.

Jacob Hackett, 45, was discovered damaging the interior of a home after the owner fled to a neighbor’s house to contact police, Urquhart wrote in a news release. He said Hackett was aggressive, confrontational and began assaulting deputies. As a result, Hackett was tased and placed in handcuffs.

“While deputies were escorting Mr. Hackett in handcuffs from the residence, Mr. Hackett suffered a medical event resulting in first responders performing life-saving measures,” Urquhart wrote. Rescue crews continued life-saving measures and kept Hackett alive during transportation to a Lewiston hospital where he died.

The Attorney General’s Office, Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and Office of Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the death, Urquhart said.
