FREEPORT — After a competitive and scoreless 40-minute first half between the Freeport Falcons and North Yarmouth Academy Panthers, the four-time reigning Class D girls’ soccer state champions, on Tuesday evening, the lights at the Joan Benoit Samuelson Track and Field never came on for the second half and as a result, the contest was postponed.

The game will be played in its entirety at a later date.

Excessive heat affecting the power box was believed to be the culprit.

“I remember in the past, when it gets too hot, that box burns out and that might have happened tonight,” said Freeport Coach Dave Intraversato. “We’ll replay the game from the beginning, so this was more like a scrimmage. It was a great game, back-and-forth.”

The Falcons had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks in the 40 minutes that were played.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a challenging game like that,” said NYA Coach Ricky Doyon. “We were looking for that. It was a very good test and we learned a lot.”
