Carey McCormick Trimble Jr.

YARMOUTH – Carey McCormick Trimble Jr., passed away on March 25, 2024 at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.

Carey was born Sept. 9, 1933 in Memphis, Tenn. to Carey M. Trimble Sr. and Evelyn (Quenichet) Trimble.

Carey joined the Naval Reserve in September of 1951 and after graduating from Germantown High School in 1953, he began his active duty service as an Avionics Technician. He achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E9) in 1972. In 1974 he was stationed at the Brunswick Naval Air Station and retired from the Navy in June of 1976.

He graduated from the University of Maine Portland-Gorham in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education. He worked at Bath Iron Works from 1979 until his retirement in 1996.

In 1981 he met Elissa Knapp and they married on Aug. 27, 1983, making their home on Cousins Island in Yarmouth, which became a warm and welcoming gathering spot for their newly blended family.

Carey was an avid runner, biker, and cross-country skier. He and Elissa enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Spring Farm, Carrabassett Valley, where he served on the Sugarloaf Nordic Ski Patrol from 1993-1998. He was awarded “Nordic Patroller of the Year” in 1995.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Royal River Post 10529 and was an active member of the American Legion Anderson-Mayberry Post 91, serving at the Commander from 2015 to 2016. He was also a member of the Yarmouth Central Men’s Club and serve as the organization’s president for many years.

In the late 1990s he joined the crew that televised the Yarmouth Town meetings. Additionally, he was an active member of the Cousins Island Chapel Association, caring for the grounds and the building for a number of years.

Carey was a volunteer with VAST (Veteran’s Adaptive Sports and Training) at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. He was a member of the South Freeport Congregational Church.

Carey is survived by his wife, Elissa; and his children, Carey “Rusty” M. Trimble III (Brenda), Rachel Corey (Drew), James Knapp IV, Kathryn Lippincott (Steve), and Thomas Knapp (Julie). He is also survived by nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Peter Trimble (Sue); and two nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sons, James and Charles Trimble; and his childhood horse, Bob.

Carey was the epitome of strength, vigor, loyalty, love and will be remembered fondly for his endless stories, his affinity for sweets, and his volunteer oriented spirit.
