LEWISTON — A woman was killed Friday night in Auburn when she attempted to avoid a collision on her motorcycle on South Main Street, according to a police news release.

Jessica Carter, 40, of Lewiston, was riding her 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle Friday around 5:30 p.m. when she struck the driver’s side of a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle driven by a 15-year-old girl with a learner’s permit.

The girl, accompanied by her mother, was struggling with the vehicle’s manual transmission as she attempted to pull out onto South Main Street, the release said.

Carter swerved but was unable to avoid the collision.

Witnesses attempted CPR on Carter, but she was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders arrived. Carter was wearing a helmet, the release said.

The Beetle’s occupants were not seriously injured.

South Main Street and Witham Road were closed for several hours for crash reconstruction.

Auburn police continue to investigate.
