SANFORD — The Hannaford supermarket at 800 Main St. in Sanford was evacuated this morning after a refrigerated produce case in the fruit section caught fire.
Store customers and workers had to leave at 10 a.m., said Capt. Gary Cushing of the Sanford Fire Department.
The fire was caused by a short circuit in a light fixture used to illuminate the case. An employee used a chemical fire extinguisher to control the fire. It went out as soon as firefighters disconnected power to the area.
A Department of Agriculture inspector had to determine how much food needed to be thrown out because of the use of the chemical extinguisher.
Nobody was hurt.
Employees were allowed back into the building at 10:30 a.m. The store reopened after 3 p.m., a Hannaford spokesman said.
