WESTPORT ISLAND — A homeowner was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after being overcome by smoke from a fire this morning that caused heavy damage to his residence.
Wiscasset Fire Chief Rob Bickford said more than 40 firefighters from eight communities responded to the fire at 100 North End Road on Westport Island.
“Between the heat and humidity, people were getting burned out pretty fast,” Bickford said, referring to the large number of firefighters, who showed up to help fight the blaze.
Bickford said the fire, which was reported around 9:30 a.m., caused heavy smoke and fire damage to about half of the home – a double-wide modular.
The cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the kitchen area, remains under investigation.
