SOUTH PORTLAND – A Connecticut sailor, who police allege sent two longtime acquaintances to the hospital with injuries that he inflicted, was being held Sunday night at the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
Steven Davis, 19, of Groton, Conn., was charged with elevated aggravated assault, a Class A crime, as well as aggravated assault.
South Portland police Sgt. Steve Webster said that sometime early Sunday, Davis allegedly assaulted another man at an apartment on Sawyer Road in Scarborough using brass knuckles.
The man, who has known Davis for years, was treated for facial lacerations and released from Maine Medical Center.
About 5:15 a.m., police were contacted by Maine Medical Center about a stabbing victim.
An investigation determined that Davis had stabbed the second man — another longtime acquaintance — during an altercation in the parking lot of the Irving gas station on Main Street in South Portland.
Webster said 19-year-old Eric Thurlow of Scarborough was taken to the hospital with stab wounds. He was released Sunday afternoon.
Davis, who serves at the Navy submarine base in Groton, was arrested by Windham police on Johnson Road in Windham.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Portland District Court at 1 p.m. today.
“We’re not sure why this happened, but we do know that both victims had known Davis for several years,” Webster said.
