AUGUSTA — Maine Republicans who were just elected to the House of Representatives are preparing to do something they haven’t done in more than three decades: elect a speaker.
And as of today, a six-way race for the presiding officer to succeed Democratic Rep. Hannah Pingree of North Haven has taken shape.
The contestants in a runoff to be decided Friday include Reps. Andre Cushing of Hampden, Paul Davis of Sangerville, Stacy Fitts of Pittsfield, Patrick Flood of Winthrop, Robert Nutting of Oakland, and Meredith Strang Burgess of Cumberland.
Last week Republicans took control of the House, 77 seats to 73 for the Democrats.
The newly elected Senate Republican majority picked Kevin Raye of Perry as their choice for president on Friday.
