Per state law, all Maine dog owners must license their animals by Jan. 31 or face a $25 late penalty per dog.

State statute requires all dogs over the age of 6 months to be registered; a valid rabies certificate is also required.

Licenses for unspayed or unneutered animals cost $11 each, while licenses for spayed or neutered dogs are $6.

The state’s online renewal service will allow renewals without a late fee through Jan. 31 at apps1.web.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/dog_license/index.plr. Pet owners can also send a check and the required paperwork to their local town offices.
