Letter to the editor: Veteran disrespected Purple Heart by giving it to Trump

So, Donald Trump has proudly received a Purple Heart (at a rally last week in Virginia). I’ll be dinged! I’m appalled that a veteran would show such disrespect for a medal such as a Purple Heart by giving it to a full-time draft dodger. Letter to the editor: All Mainers should condemn Trump’s racist statements

“Somalis condemn Trump’s insinuations on crime” (Page A1, Aug. 6) is the wrong headline. All Mainers should condemn Donald Trump’s insinuations about the Somalis. There are many white Mainers who are also offended by these racist statements. Refugees are important to our state. John Casey Lewiston

Letter to the editor: Proud moderate Republican will not vote for Trump

I appreciate a politician who doesn’t adhere to extreme political correctness, one who rails against the “liberal media” and one who emphasizes a realistic approach to policy instead of one based in misleading, “feel-good” optimism. I am a proudly moderate member of the Republican Party. I agree with many of Donald Trump’s policy positions, but […]

Letter to the editor: PORTopera has delighted music lovers for 21 years

I was privileged to be part of the enthusiastic, sellout audience for the performance of “Carmen” at Merrill Auditorium on July 29. It was an excellent production of this popular opera, presented by PORTopera. The leads, played by Maya Lahyani and Adam Diegel, were outstanding, both musically and dramatically. The supporting cast was also very […]

Letter to the editor: Why did paper ignore Portland’s Greener Cleaner until its demise?

As the owner of Portland’s Greener Cleaner, I am writing in response to your July 29 article on the closing of our business. I cannot help but wonder why, when we opened Portland’s Greener Cleaner 4½ years ago, your newspaper completely ignored us, despite our numerous news releases. Now, I cannot help but notice the […]

Letter to the editor: Frightening reasoning used to castigate Muslims, Khans

I am astonished at letter writer Thomas F. Shields, M.D., when he asks of Khizr Khan (Aug. 4): “Does he realize that most of the terrorists were Muslims?” Does Dr. Shields realize that the right-wing fear-mongering machine has co-opted the term “terrorist” to specifically mean “radical Islamic terrorist”? So in today’s world, 100 percent of […]

Letter to the editor: Trump points out how failures of last eight years have eroded America’s standing

Donald Trump’s campaign theme is to “Make America Great Again.” During the recent Democratic convention, many of the speakers, including President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, said that America is great. What candidate Trump is trying to point out is America’s greatness today, compared to eight years ago, when Obama took office. Let’s take […]

Letter to the editor: Trump comments about Somalis divisive, heartbreaking

At Donald Trump’s rally at Merrill Auditorium on Aug. 4, Trump warned about the threat that he believes Somali refugees pose to our state. He discussed the links of Somalis in Minnesota to the Islamic State and grimly painted a picture of fear and divisiveness. Trump shared the stage with a governor who, at a […]

Letter to the editor: Are commercial-style ads within MPBN guidelines?

I have been a fan of the noncommercial programming of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, and I support MPBN through my monthly donations. It had been refreshing to depend on a channel that did not clog the airwaves with commercial product ads. However, I notice a significant change and wonder if the “noncommercial character of […]

Letter to the editor: No grounds for letter writer to doubt facts about Khan family’s loss

Dr. Thomas F. Shields’ letter of Aug. 4 (“Khan fails to acknowledge Muslim terrorists in U.S.”) is most disturbing to read for its underlying challenge to the factuality of the loss of the son of Khizr and Ghazala Khan. We can all agree that Mr. Khan’s speech at the Democratic National Convention had political overtones […]
