Linden Frederick's "Save-a-Lot" is the basis for Bowdoin College graduate Anthony Doerr's piece on opioid addiction and grief. A Pulitzer Prize winner, Doerr said the painting of two houses on Portland's Valley Street spoke to him because he liked the binary relationship of the discount grocery store sign flanked by the homes in the foreground. "The whole piece got entirely out of control, and it ended up taking me several months," Doerr said.
Richard Russo used "Downstairs" as the inspiration for a story based on Gloversville, N.Y., where he grew up.
Yarmouth resident and Kirkus Prize-winner Lily King wrote a story for "Mansard," centering on a suburban woman in the 1960s.
The quality of light becomes Linden Frederick's central subject in many of his paintings, such as "Takeout."
"Rear Window" by Linden Frederick is among his low-light landscapes.
"Night Off" by Linden Frederick is among the 15 oil-on-canvas paintings of stark nighttime scenes paired with a story in "Night Stories."
Linden Frederick's "Off Ramp" is among the works featured in "Night Stories."
