Contemporary artist Sam Van Aken starts planting his hybridized fruit trees Thursday at Thompson’s Point in Portland after making the journey from his home base in New York. The plantings are part of an ongoing series called the Tree of 40 Fruit, a Van Aken project in which, through grafting, he has created trees that produce colored blossoms in the spring and 40 different types of fruit in the summer. The Portland installation will be the first grove of hybrids by Van Aken, an associate professor in the Art Department at Syracuse University. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer
