OLD ORCHARD BEACH — An Old Orchard Beach man was arrested and charged with driving drunk after he crashed his SUV into an Amtrak Downeaster train early Thursday morning.

Police say a passenger was seriously injured in the collision at the Union Avenue Crossing about 1:30 a.m. The passenger, who was sitting in the backseat, was ejected from the vehicle.

Brendan Connolly, 35, of Old Orchard Beach was charged with operating under the influence. He remains in the York County Jail.

Old Orchard Beach police Lt. Tim DeLuca said the injured passenger appeared to be in serious or critical condition and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Reached Thursday evening, DeLuca said he did not plan to release the injured person’s name before Friday. DeLuca said police are trying to notify the passenger’s family.

The northbound train had left Boston at 11 p.m. An Amtrak spokeswoman said no passengers or train crew members were hurt. The train was delayed about 90 minutes.

DeLuca said the accident remains under investigation.
