Two westbound lanes of Forest Avenue in Portland were closed Tuesday morning after oil spilled from an underground storage container.

The outbound lanes are closed near Exit 6 of I-295 for several hours Tuesday morning, but were expected to reopen by 10 a.m. Ted Talbot, spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, said crews are still trying to determine the source of the oil.

An underground oil container was struck by crews working on the Exit 6 improvement project, Talbot said. A temporary fix will seal the container this morning and a permanent seal will be done overnight when construction crews return to the project.

Drivers are being asked to find alternative routes around the area.
