PORTLAND — Acadian redfish is being featured at Maine restaurants and retailers for the next 10 days as part of an initiative to promote underutilized seafood species in the Gulf of Maine.

Sixteen restaurants from Ogunquit to Bar Harbor, a seafood market, Bowdoin College and L.L. Bean’s employee dining service are taking part in the promotion, which begins Friday and runs through May 19.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s Out of the Blue campaign was launched last year and is continuing this year with five different species that will be featured during selected weeks from now into November.

The program aims to raise public awareness and demand for lesser-known fish. Redfish, mackerel, dogfish, whiting and Atlantic pollock are this year’s featured species.

A list of participants can be found at www.gmri.org.
