PORTLAND — Richard L. Scott, 86, died April 30 at his home, with his family by his side. He was born in Portland on March 25, 1927, the son of William Sr. and Olivette Scott.

Scott grew up in the area and attended local schools. In 1945, he left school to serve his country in the United States Navy, where he was present on the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered to end World War II.

Upon his return, he graduated high school in 1948. He married Irene Mary Cantin on Oct. 13, 1951. Scott was a member of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 832, and the Disabled American Veterans. In 1967 he began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, and he retired in 1987. He was a faithful communicant of St. Pius X Church in Portland, and he enjoyed ham radio.

Scott is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Irene, of Portland; son, David Lee Scott and wife, Debra, of Portland; two grandchildren, Christina Kiebish and husband, Michael, and Ryan Scott and wife, Nicole; one great-grandchild, Haley Kiebish; a brother, William C. Scott Jr., of Portland; and a sister, Dorothy R. Keefe and husband, Edward, of Port Charlotte, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 2 St. Pius X Church, in Portland followed by interment in New Calvary Cemetery, in South Portland.
