When Portland Ovations comes across a show that doesn’t fit neatly into the music, dance or theater categories, it creates a new category: Innovations.

For the 2014-15 performance season, the Portland-based presenting arts organization has three shows on the schedule that defy easy categorization: The movie-maker Sam Green and indie rock band Yo La Tengo collaborate for “The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller,” a live cinematic concert at the State Theatre on Oct. 29; an on-stage conversation with radio host Ira Glass on Nov. 8 at Merrill Auditorium; and a live theatrical piece called “Basetrack” about U.S. Marines stationed overseas and how they communicate with their families. That will be performed March 26, 2015, at Merrill.

Aimee Petrin, executive director of Portland Ovations, announced the season during a members’ preview party at the Masonic Temple on Congress Street in Portland.

The season includes a performance of the storybook ballet “Swan Lake” by Moscow City Ballet on March 18, 2015; the family-oriented play “Big Nate” on Nov. 8, based on the comic strip created by Portlander Lincoln Peirce; and a bluegrass concert Nov. 1 by Béla Fleck, Abigail Washburn and the Del McCoury Band.

The season begins Oct. 3 at the Victoria Mansion with a performance of the piece “Brownstones” by the New York-based Metropolis Ensemble. Metropolis, which features new music, was founded by Maine native and Bates College grad Andrew Cyr.
