In regard to Question 1 (Maine’s bear hunting referendum), I urge all Mainers to support the work of our state biologists and vote “no.”

Maine has a healthy bear population that is truly an asset to our state. Our biologists are nationally recognized and have over 40 years of scientific data that support the methods we use today to manage our bear population. While other states struggle to manage their bear population (note the recent fatality in New Jersey), Maine is seen as a leader.

In addition, bear hunting supports over 900 jobs and brings millions of dollars in revenue to parts of our state that badly need it. Eliminating the hunt would have a devastating effect on our rural economy.

Numerous political leaders, including all three candidates for governor, support our current management practices. Please join me in voting “no” in November.
