Tuesday’s article about the 11-year-old boy shooting a 502-pound black bear leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth (“Hunter, 11, bags 502-pound black bear in Maine,” Sept. 30).
And the more I think about it, the more upset I become.
How can this kind of chase be called “hunting”? Dogs chase a scared bear up a tree, and then a person comes up close and shoots the bear in the heart.
There is no skill to this. This is, pure and simple, lazy human domination over a defenseless wild animal. To teach a young boy that this is a fair fight is to lead him down a very slippery slope.
