Question 1, if passed, will have a significant impact on both the animals and people in Maine.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife use conservation techniques to manage the wildlife population, including seasonal hunting and ethical hunting tactics. An example is the wild turkey. At one time, Maine’s wild turkey population was nonexistent. Now, after restocking and managing the hunting seasons, Maine’s wild turkeys are thriving.

We need to trust that our state will study the population of animals to ensure a proper balance for the environment.

Recently, a man was attacked and killed in New Jersey by a black bear that was scouring for food. For many years, New Jersey had no black bear hunt. It now has about as many bear complaints as it does bears. A hunt has been reinstated to help control these complaints and curtail future human-bear encounters.

Please vote “no” on Question 1.
