MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — It wasn’t a white Christmas in parts of northern New England, but it could be a white start to the new year.

A winter storm is headed to northern New England, bringing snow and freezing rain for the weekend.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for up to 5 inches of snow and some ice in Caledonia, Orange, Washington, Windsor and in eastern Addison and Rutland counties in Vermont this weekend. Much of Maine and New Hampshire could see a bit more snow followed by sleet and rain on Sunday.

Loon Mountain ski resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire, which started making snow in early November and has 90 percent of its trails open, is expected to get 6 to 8 inches in this weekend’s storm ”“ likely to prompt more people to head to the mountains to ski.

“Whenever it snows in people’s backyards, we definitely see an increase in people coming up and skiing,” spokesman Greg Kwasnik said.
