DERRY, N.H. – New Hampshire’s public health lab is confirming that a fox that attacked and bit a 10-year-old girl and her father in Derry had rabies.

The attack took place about 7:45 p.m. in Derry as the girl played near a wooded area near O’Hara Field.

WMUR reported that her father came to the girl’s aid and suffered bites and scratches before he shot and killed the fox with a handgun.

His daughter suffered bite marks and scratches to her feet and ankles. The father and daughter were treated for their injuries.

Derry police Capt. Vern Thomas said the state lab confirmed Thursday afternoon that the fox was rabid.
