CONCORD, N.H. – David J. Bates Sr. age 87 died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 after a brief illness.

Dave was born in Everett Massachusetts, the son of the late John and Isabel (Remington) Bates. He was a graduate of Thorton Academy in Saco, Maine.

Through the years he made frequent trips to Maine to visit with family and friends. He served in the U.S. Air Force before starting his career as an Air Traffic Controller. Dave and his wife Fran have been residents of Concord, New Hampshire since 1963. They were avid hockey fans and followed the Concord Coachmen and Eastern Olympics. Dave was avid reader and overall sports enthusiast who loved his New England sports teams. Later in life he became a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and he loved watching The Ohio State Band. He frequently attended his grandkids sporting events.

Dave spent a lot of his leisure time golfing and was a member of Beaver Meadow Golf Course for close to 50 years. Most recently he was frequently seen exercising at Planet Fitness.

Dave was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Fran (Colpitts) Bates; daughter Patty (Bates) Morley and her husband Richard of Colchester, Vermont; son David and his wife Carolyn (Hartings) of Dayton Ohio; grandkids Nicholas Morley and wife Sarah and daughter Scarlet of Sacramento California, Thomas Morley of Rochester, New York, Katharine Morley of  Tampa,Florida, and Libby, Danny and John Bates of Columbus, Ohio. 

Visiting hours were held on Sunday, Feb.26 at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St. Concord. 

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 27 at Christ the King Parish, 72 South Main Street, Concord. at 10 a.m..
