WELLS — More than a dozen food trucks and vendors will team up to raise funds for the Animal Welfare Society at Congdon’s After Dark food truck park on Sunday, May 19 in Wells.

The first annual “Trucks and Pups” event will serve as a kick-off to the 2019 season for Congdon’s After Dark, New England’s first daily food truck, operating in the parking lot of Congdon’s Doughnuts Family Restaurant and Bakery. The pet-friendly park saw a huge influx in visitors in 2018, including hundreds of dogs and pet lovers.

The park typically operates from Memorial Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day, but owner Gary Leech said they decided to open a little earlier this year to help a cause close to their hearts.  

“We love our pets and (Animal Welfare Society) does an amazing job finding homes for all sorts of animals,” said Leech. “They provide an important service and we are proud to help their wonderful organization.”

The Animal Welfare Society is a regional leader in companion animal welfare and operates a progressive animal shelter and adoption center in West Kennebunk and other satellite adoption centers throughout northern New England.

“We could not be more grateful to the entire team at Congdon’s. Their investment in this event is a testament to their commitment to the well-being of animals in our community,” said AWS Director of Development Kerrie Leclair. “The proceeds will truly change the lives of animals in need — whether it’s through daily care at the shelter for animals awaiting adoption or through the assistance we are able to offer pet owners in our veterinary clinic. The impact of this event will be felt for a long time.”

The event will feature more than a dozen food trucks that will donate at least 50 percent of their proceeds. Those include Tripp’s Farmhouse Cafe, MacDaddy’s Seafood and Tots, Fahrenheit 225 BBQ, Gotta Be Frank, Crêpe Elizabeth, Fishin’ Ships, Mobile Musette, Tasting Maine, Knew Potato Caboose, Big Grampa’s Grill, and Congdon’s Doughnuts. 

Entertainment will include live music from Scott Stinson, living statue Deb Cram and facepainting by Squirrelcat Designs.  There will also be several giveaways and other sources of family fun.

Other businesses donating to the event include Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Shields Meats and Produce, Lamb and Wesson, Favorite Foods, Lepage Bakery, Hormel Foods, New England Coffee and Coca-Cola. Jon Secord will provide photography.  

“We truly appreciate all the amazing support we’ve received in planning this event. So many people have just said, ‘Of course, what do you need me to do?’” said Leech. “That says so much about this community.”

Evening events will start at 4 p.m. and end around 9 p.m. Additional parking will be available at York County Community College (trolley service from 3:45 to 9:30 p.m.) as well as Aubuchon Hardware at 1165 Post Road and the old Wells auto museum next door. Rain date is May 20.

Commemorative T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event. Pets are welcome in the park, but must remain on leashes at all times.
