Portland High School recognized for college prep

Portland High School has been named one of the top schools in the state for college success, according to GreatSchools, a national nonprofit. The College Success Award recognizes schools that excel at preparing students to enroll and succeed in college.

Portland High School is one of 15 public high schools in Maine and 1,742 nationwide to demonstrate successful track record of graduating students who enroll in two- or four-year college, are ready for college-level coursework, and persist on to their second year.

Portland exceeded the state average in both the percentage of students who enrolled in college (75% versus the 61% state average) and who also showed persistence by returning for the second year (79%, versus 78% at the state level).

The college enrollment rate Portland’s other two high schools also exceeded the state average with Deering at 70% and Casco Bay at 75%. and Casco Bay – also focus on ensuring students achieve their post-secondary goals. At 76% Deering, just missed the state average in persistence and Casco Bay was close in the persistence category at 70%, according to a press release from Portland Public Schools.

Talbot Community School awarded $50K grant

The Gerald E. Talbot Community School in Portland is among four Maine schools to receive $50,000 each in state grants to support their work as community schools that serve neighborhood hubs uniting  families, educators and community partners.

Talbot will use the funding to support its after-school enrichment opportunities for students, including a homework diner program, and its Walking School Bus program.
