POLAND — A Tuesday morning crash on Route 26 claimed the life of the driver of a car after it collided with a tractor-trailer truck.

A preliminary investigation showed that about 7:10 a.m., a 2018 4-door Hyundai was traveling north on Route 26 — Maine Street — when the driver lost control and the car skidded, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a 1995 Peterbilt tractor-trailer in the area of Cyndi’s Dockside restaurant, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook site.

The driver of the Hyundai, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, according to the Facebook post. The name was withheld pending notification of the driver’s family.

The driver of the truck, Simon Couture, 39, of Coaticook, Quebec, was not injured, according to the Facebook post.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Tuesday afternoon. It was being reconstructed by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, which was assisted by the Lewiston Police Department and the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit, a standard protocol in all fatal crashes involving a tractor-trailer, according to the Facebook Post.

Route 26 from Springwater Road to Aggregate Road was closed for about 2½ hours while the crash was investigated.
