You might conclude, from the May 27 Maine Sunday Telegram (“Choice facing Maine Democrats: Nominate unabashed progressive or someone ‘electable’ “) that it’s been easy for Betsy Sweet to get Clean Elections funding because she hasn’t had to “court so many donors.” Not so!

She has had to “court” over 4,800 donors, way more than any other Democratic candidate for governor. The difference is that her qualifying contributors could only give $5 each, unlike other candidates’ maximum of $1,600 each. Getting almost 5,000 donors has been enormous work, but has demonstrated statewide support as well as the freedom to act for Maine people’s interests rather than special interests.

Betsy offers a wider Democratic tent, welcoming the unenrolled and Bernie Sanders supporters and people looking for courageous leadership committed to their needs, such as universal health care – not the same old, same old. A nonprofit advocate for 35 years, Betsy knows the system without being part of it. She’s the ultimate insider outsider, the best candidate by far.
