PORTLAND — A nationwide search for a new police chief will begin this week, city spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said.
Local and nationally placed job listings will be posted Friday, Feb. 1, with a March 8 deadline to apply. City Manager Jon Jennings hopes to make an appointment in late spring or early summer, Grondin said in a Jan. 22 statement.
The search process will require candidates to meet with city staff, municipal union leaders, community leaders and have “an evaluation by an outside assessment center,” Grondin said.
Vern Malloch is the acting police chief. He was appointed last summer following Chief Michael Sauschuck’s appointment as assistant city manager.
Sauschuck has now been nominated by Gov. Janet Mills to become the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.
