Letter to the editor: Raise high school sports referees’ pay, ban offenders from games
The March 1 Press Herald editorial, “Our View: Berating refs should be out-of-bounds conduct” (Page A6), captures the essence of a long-standing problem that has seen a dramatic increase. The slow, but sure, loss of high school sports referees poses an existential threat to a long-standing quality of life experience in our communities. As is […]

Letter to the editor: Substantial share of voters support Ogunquit recall process
In her Feb. 21 letter (“Ogunquit recall shouldn’t proceed if it can’t withstand legal scrutiny”), Mary V. Buck gives the impression that 260 registered Ogunquit voters “out of 1,217 registered voters” signed each of the three recall petitions for Select Board members Charles Waite III, Madeline Mooney and Robert Winn Jr. It would be true […]

Letter to the editor: Confucius Institute opens up opportunities for USM students
In a recent letter (March 6), the writer, Eamonn Dundon, raised concerns over the University of Southern Maine’s Confucius Institute. As a USM student who has had a tremendous amount of direct experience with the Confucius Institute, I believe this criticism is misguided. Letter to the editor: Rise in cost of necessities outpaces increase in Social Security benefit
I am writing to ask if anyone can explain why Central Maine Power bills, Portland Water District bills and the cost of most food items and vitamins have recently increased after Social Security benefits increased a paltry amount. These increases have more than wiped out the additional Social Security benefit. Connie Smith Westbrook

Letter to the editor: Paid sick days will help protect Maine health care workers, patients
I work in health care, and the safety of our staff and patients depends on workers’ ability to access the care we need. I am fortunate that my employer allows paid sick days. If this weren’t the case, my co-workers and I would be put in the unfair and unethical situation of possibly infecting our […]

Letter to the editor: The company he keeps says a lot about Trump
I must give President Trump credit for his efforts to “drain the swamp” in Washington, D.C., of self-serving career politicians. Over the past several years he has managed to surround himself with upstanding, selfless public servants like Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, Michael Cohen, Roger Stone and Scott Pruitt to help him Make America […]

Letter to the editor: Millennial, Generation Z voters should seek out independent ideas
In today’s politically divisive environment, many young voters are encouraged to participate in the American two-party system. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 37 percent of eligible voters in the upcoming 2020 presidential election will be members of the millennial generation and Generation Z (born after 1996). What does this mean exactly? In 2016, […]

Letter to the editor: Vaccinating kids ensures liberty, equality for all
Maine’s rate of non-medical vaccination opt-outs for school kids is the nation’s seventh highest, and it is getting worse. If we do not stop the slide, our community herd immunity will fail and we will face increasing outbreaks of dangerous whooping cough and measles like we’ve seen in the Pacific Northwest. This will put kids […]
