April 23, 1940: The way things shaped up on city streets after an unseasonable snow storm hit Portland. This photo was taken, appropriately, on Winter Street.
May 11, 1945: Deering High dimondeers, slated to play South Portland, instead staged a comedy game when the tilt was cancelled by unseasonable weather. Gene Sturgeon gets set to 'slide' for the plate - and he brought along his sled for the job. Batter Norman Sawyer, catcher Billy Eves and umpire Ole Oleson watch.
May 11, 1945: Gene Surgeon completes the slide home and batter Norman Sawyer watches as catcher Bill Edes taps Sturgeon (hey, that's a snowball, not a baseball!!) and umpire Ole Olsen (Oaks AC) calls the runner out.
May 1945 : A freak snowstorm caused damage in Portland including this felled tree on Cumberland Avenue near the Jewish Community Center.
April 23, 1956: It was more than a month after spring officially arrived and this motorist left a note on top of his car expressing his disgust with the unseasonable storm.
April 24, 1956: Sneaky storm strikes with soggy punch. Snowflakes appear almost as large as the globe on the lamp at right on Federal Street as the sixth spring storm dumped over six inches in Portland.
March 30, 1956: Propellerless Northeast Airlines Convair after it crashed while landing during a snowstorm at Portland Municipal Airport. Passengers were bruised and shaken but there were no serious injuries.
April 14: 1961: The second spring snowstorm in less than a week sloshed into Maine and by nightfall driving was hazardous. Cleaning off his father's rear window while two friends watch from inside the car is Allen Mallory of South Portland.
