It is easy to understand why Republicans would object to a transgender girl playing soccer on a girls team. Since everyone knows there are no transgender Republicans, nor are there any transgender children of Republicans, we can understand their stance. What? Oh, I see … never mind. Letter: A worthy tribute to the incredible Frances Perkins
A move is afoot to designate the Frances Perkins Homestead in Newcastle a national monument. This is a great idea for several reasons. Frances Perkins is an American hero, yet many, even in Maine, do not recognize her name. Perkins was FDR’s secretary of labor. Aside from being the first woman cabinet member, she essentially […]
Letter: Maine Teacher Residency helping to fill school staffing gaps
Preparing, certifying and supporting new educators is an effort that deserves broader support.
Letter: Will support of Israel manipulate U.S. into another war?
I sometimes wonder if doing away with dual citizenship might loosen the stranglehold Israel has on U.S. foreign policy. It might, at least, reduce the number of campaign fundraising trips that so many members of Congress regularly take to Israel. I mean, we don’t see Congress making routine, Mecca-like pilgrimages to Maine or any other […]
Letter: Questions to consider about proposed housing at Yard South
I live in Portland, so I am no NIMBY. Here are some questions to consider about the proposed housing at Yard South: • Why do developers look at open space and think “build”? Why would South Portland be better with thousands more people – all added in one small space – with thousands more cars, […]
Letter: There’s plenty we can do to help mitigate climate change
The Aug. 2, 2024 article “U.S. faces exceptional day of climate change-driven heat Friday” was certainly accurate. The article highlighted how “almost the entire United States is forecast to experience above-normal temperatures, with many locations forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees higher than typical.” Maine was no exception. Summers in Maine used to mean […]
Letter: An opportunity to solve Portland’s housing crisis
Electing City Council candidates who support social housing will pay off in the long run.
Letter: An impressive display of unity by Portland’s restaurant community
The show of force by Portland’s restaurant community at the Aug. 19 City Council hearing on the tip credit was profound. During the industry’s busiest season, dozens of servers and operators took time away from work to state their case against a proposal to eliminate the tip credit – an issue decisively rejected by Portland […]
Letter: Remember our shared heritage
It’s amazing how people forget that the first settlers who came to this great country of ours were immigrants. Jamestown, Virginia. Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. New France and the list goes on. Whether our ancestors came through Ellis Island in New York or via Canada, they were immigrants. Dennis Ouellette Saco
Letter: Theater company makes a winning move
I was so glad to read, in the Aug. 16 Portland Press Herald (“Good Theater finds new home at Stevens Square Community Center”), that the Good Theater, formerly located on Munjoy Hill, is planning to move into the old Catherine McAuley High School auditorium on Stevens Avenue, where I taught as an English teacher many […]
