Our Sen. Susan Collins is a declared moderate, a woman who expressed being in favor of a woman’s right to choose.

It would be unconscionable for her to confirm a judge to the Supreme Court who, despite his relatively young age, represents 19th-century thinking: Judge Brett Kavanaugh lacks a sense of environmental responsibility, seems oblivious to the serious economic inequality of Americans, appears not to have an understanding of the deep racial divide or the dire need for health care for all, nor does he see – even as a father of two girl – the justice in giving women the rights they’ve been fighting so hard for.

With another ultra-conservative justice on the Supreme Court, the United States will surely regress further and lose its place on the international stage as a respected player.

I urge Sen. Collins, for the love of this country, in the name of justice and the American people, to hold off filling the seat for the Supreme Court with this backward-thinking appointee.

While Judge Kavanaugh may be hard-working, religious, smart and polite, his worldview is outdated and Americans with old-fashioned views do not belong on the nation’s highest court.

I sincerely hope Sen. Collins will have the courage and the conscience to say “no” to Judge Kavanaugh.

Americans desperately need a wise, forward-thinking justice on the Supreme Court.
