We recently had a family gathering at a Sea Dogs game, and, as Kevin Thomas’ July 8 column points out, this year’s team is not very good and not very entertaining. But he did not deal with two important observations of our group, ranging in age from 85 to 11.
During the game we attended, the Sea Dogs were characterized by a lack of effort – no hustle. A routine fly ball dropped in for an extra base hit because the fielder jogged toward it – just one example of lackadaisical play. It occurred routinely during the game.
Secondly, the Sea Dogs made a large number of mistakes during the game – some physical and others mental. Pop flies were missed played; bases were not covered; base running was sloppy. These are things that any decent Babe Ruth coach would address.
But to be honest, the level of play of this year’s Sea Dogs is simply not up to AA standards. And that is too bad.
