The discovery was made shortly before 3:26 p.m. Saturday on Poland Spring Road, at the home of Douglas Scott, who died this year at 82, state police said in a statement.

A relative called 911 to report the remains, and  detectives with the Maine State Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for the state police, said the remains were in a shed on the property.

The remains were examined by the state Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday morning, but further tests are pending that may help determine the identity of the person and the cause of death.

“Detectives, deputies and troopers worked over the weekend investigating the circumstances surrounding this discovery,” state police said in a statement. “Detectives and deputies continue interviewing witnesses and other persons of interest at this time.”

Police said they do not believe there is any threat to the public.
