Letter to the editor: It’s time to muzzle MaineToday’s attack dog, Nemitz

Really! MaineToday Media should put a muzzle on their prize attack dog, Bill Nemitz. The man is living in another world in which he sees himself as unassailable and untouchable. His recent tirade against the use of photos on electronic benefit transfer cards (“Just how much fraud will that EBT photo stop?,” May 7) shows […]

Letter to the editor: A world of wisdom comes to USM

Something exciting happened in education last week, and it took place at the University of Southern Maine. The Maine Model United Nations Conference celebrated its 16th year as nearly 500 Maine high school and middle school students spent two days in Gorham as delegates, led by USM students, learning to approach global issues collaboratively, respectfully […]

Letter to the editor: Right bears brunt of blame at state and federal levels

Alan Caron’s May 22 column about “fiscal moderates” is a load of hooey (“Politically, fiscal moderates are becoming the new homeless”). He has a notion rattling around in his head that both the left and the right are equally severe in their economic policy, but only one side has recently taken extremism to a whole […]

Letter to the editor: Even racial slurs deserve constitutional protection

Re: “N.H. police commissioner resigns in wake of Obama slur” (May 20): Although I cannot condone the actions of Robert Copeland of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, who used the “n” word to refer to an elected government official, I will applaud him for standing up for his First Amendment rights. He still believes in the Constitution! […]

Letter to the editor: Only LePage has record of private, public achievement

Who is Eliot Cutler and why does he want to be my governor? To be honest, I had never heard of him prior to the 2010 election and after the results were known, I didn’t hear from or about him again. Now that we are on the verge of the next election for governor, he […]

Letter to the editor: Numbers tell the story that Democrats ignore

The April unemployment rate for Maine was 5.7 percent. It was over 8 percent when Gov. LePage took office. The April unemployment rate for New England was 6.1 percent and the national rate was 6.3 percent. It never ceases to amaze me how Democrats are impervious to empirical evidence. Letter to the editor: Breen the right choice for District 25 Democrats

Transportation and other infrastructure investment is key to Maine businesses’ ability to compete internationally in the 21st-century economy. Cathy Breen, Democratic primary candidate in District 25, understands this, making her the right choice on June 10. Deep water ports, railroads, high speed Internet, renewable energy, public/mass transportation, bridges and, yes, roads, are crucial to Maine […]

Letter to the editor: Incumbent Sheriff Joyce has earned another term

My name is Michael Wood. I reside in Scarborough and will be voting to re-elect Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce in the June 10 Democratic primary election. I ask that you consider Sheriff Joyce as your choice as well. He has over 28 years experience at the sheriff’s office, serving in nearly every capacity including […]

Letter to the editor: It’s tough to live frugally with high property taxes

I read, with great interest, a recent letter to the “Voice of the People” regarding the difficulty seniors are having with paying their Portland property taxes. I’d like to add my comments. I am 70 years old. I have had a cottage on Peaks Island for the past 30 years. It is very small, but […]

Letter to the editor: Meat substitutes ideal for grilling

Folks ready to fire up their outdoor grill on Memorial Day face a deadly choice of inflicting food poisoning or cancer on family and friends: food poisoning by E. coli and salmonella bacteria, if they undercook the meat; cancer, if they heat meat to the point of creating cancer-causing compounds. Luckily, a bunch of enterprising […]
