I am voting “yes” on Question 1 to end bear baiting practices in Maine because I do have faith and trust in the biologists in our state. I trust they can devise a more suitable management system, and I’m confident that their higher educations and training specific to bear management practices included more than doughnuts, junk food, traps and dogs.

Other states with similarly trained scientists have developed more humane practices to manage their bear populations and to preserve a fair hunt, and I’m sure our scientists can do that as well.

As for the economic advantages that derive from the current baiting practices, I would remind voters that cockfighting and dog fights also produce revenue, but those “sports” are outlawed for obvious reasons.

Vote “yes” on 1 to show support for our Maine biologists’ ability to think outside a box of doughnuts and to preserve a fair hunt in Maine.
