It should be obvious to all who saw the televised debates that independent Eliot Cutler is hands down the best candidate for governor.

Watching Mike Michaud and Paul LePage endlessly bicker and spew vapid talking points was painful and embarrassing. Eliot is right – voters should reject the gridlocked, do-nothing parties in favor of a highly capable independent who’s beholden to no one.

Our responsibility as voters is to pick the best candidate, not merely to rubber-stamp our preferred party’s nominee. Democratic leaders knew the best candidate when they asked Eliot to run for governor before having to settle for Mike.

Michaud, not Cutler, is the spoiler in this race and should withdraw, for the same reasons the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Kansas withdrew: to give a more qualified and capable independent a better chance at unseating the Republican incumbent. Take the high road, Mike.
